The etymology of the word plumbing:
Plumbing comes from the root word “Plumbum” which in the Greek language means Lead. The connection is that in ancient Greece, pipes that carried water into and out of the premises were made out of lead. And people who worked with the metal were called ‘plumbarius’ which was later shortened to “plumber”.
How old is the science of plumbing?
Plumbing is no recent science. The science dates back to at least 3000 BC when the world’s first and the most ancient civilizations were taking shape effectively in the cradle of the river basins and valleys.
It is not a coincidence that when the ancient civilizations were settling down they only did so near freshwater sources. It is common sense that water is an essential part of life. and when man started to settle down after leading a nomadic herdsmen kind of life, he realized that water is not only important for being able to cultivate and grow his own food but also to keep hygiene and sanitation and consequently to keep diseases, suffering, and death at bay. You can learn more about these at Plumbing Force.
The logistics of water:
The earliest settlers knew that the logistics of water that is bringing in and taking out used water was a big challenge and therefore they preferred to settle down at the sources where there was plentiful fresh water especially on the river banks of perennial rivers.
You must have heard about the world’s oldest civilization called the Indus valley civilization which blossomed in one of the greatest civilizations and as the archaeologists and the historians try to understand it more fully they cannot grasp the intelligent use of plumbing that the Indus valley civilization employed. Indeed, it is the precursor to the first ever planned urban area and for good reason!
Albert Einstein and his connection with plumbers!
We all know how quirky Einstein’s answers were when he was asked questions in his public life. At one such instance, he was asked what he would want to become if he was given a second chance in life and he condescendingly replied “plumber”!
This so impressed the committee that the Plumbers and the Steamfitters union announced Einstein to become an honorary member of their society. Some honor there!
Technology to the hilt:
What comes to your mind when you think of a country like Japan?
As for me, Japan means a country which is completely in the sway of technology. So while you will think that technology is used in all spheres in Japan, there is something that can help you break into guffaws. In public lavatories in Japan, the technology fitted allows the urinals to respond to human voice and commands. So, after the person is done with answering his call, he just needs to say “flush” to automatically flush the toilet. So buttons need to be touched. Wow! Lesser bacteria on the hand we say.
This cannot get weirder:
In the USA, a whopping $100,000 were spent in order to find out how exactly convenient it is to put the toilet paper roll into the hook. So whether it is front l=flap hanging or from the downside? Really!
What happens when you find out that the marine life is full of drugs and chemicals?
Recent statistics have been testing fishes and other marine life fully up with heavy doses of drugs that are prescribed for human beings. The study concluded that while it is common knowledge that when the humans excrete a major portion of their drugs that they are on leaves their body, it is surprising that when the same humans consume the fish and other marine creatures with over-dosage of drugs, it can terribly harm their system, not to forget that the ecosystem is also getting very polluted and some of the drugs are potent enough to reduce the virility of the marine life.
Plumbers but no connection with plumbing!
Freaking but yes there is a group of people who go by the name plumbers. The plumbers are apparently a group of people who were commissioned by President Nixon in the white house in the Burma War to shield classified information from leaving the White House through unofficial leaks. The group was highly successful in plugging the leak points and the name stuck. The idea was to stop leakages hence that name! Hilarious but true!!
